About Online Camp Grid
A small editorial team in Reno, Nevada, writing practical camping guides for the landscapes we know best.
Why we built a grid
Online Camp Grid began with a simple observation: in the American West, the same weekend can mean frost at a granite lake, wind on a sagebrush flat or heat in a desert basin, sometimes within a single day's drive. Generic camping advice rarely accounts for that range. We wanted a planner that starts with the terrain and the kind of trip, then layers on the skills and gear.
So we organized our guides into a grid of six camp types: tent camping, car camping, backpacking trips, desert camping, lakeside camping and winter camping. Our blog fills in the practical details that cut across all of them.
Based in Reno, Nevada
Online Camp Grid Inc. is based in Reno, a city that sits where the Sierra Nevada meets the Great Basin. Within a few hours lie alpine lakes, high desert ranges, volcanic tablelands and some of the darkest night skies in the country. That geography shapes everything we write.

Our principles
What you can expect from us
Practical first
We write for real trips: packing lists, decisions and habits that make a difference in the field.
Safety and honesty
We cover heat, cold, wildlife, fire and weather plainly. We do not invent ratings, statistics or testimonials.
Low impact
Our advice follows the Leave No Trace principles and encourages respect for land, wildlife and other visitors.
Pointing to the source
Rules change. We send readers to the managing agency for current permits, closures and restrictions.
How our editorial team works
Our articles are written and reviewed by the Online Camp Grid Editorial Team. We draw on widely published guidance from public land agencies, outdoor education organizations and health authorities, along with practical field experience in western terrain.
- We avoid prices, booking claims and other details that go stale quickly.
- We do not accept payment for placement in our guides.
- We review guides as seasons change and update them when regulations or best practices shift.
- We welcome corrections from readers and act on them promptly.
What we are not
We are not a land management agency, a reservation service or a guiding company. We do not book campsites or lead trips. Our role is to help you plan well and then send you to the official sources for the final word.
